SEWING
A MIX OF PERSONAL AND CLASS PROJECTS
WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL, I TOOK A BEGINNER'S SEWING COURSE AND DID VARIOUS PROJECTS INCLUDING A TWIN SIZED QUILT. BEING AN APPAREL STUDIES STUDENT AT NDSU, I GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE APPAREL CONSTRUCTION COURSES. I'VE TAKEN AN INTERMEDIATE COURSE ON APPAREL CONSTRUCTION AND FIT AND TWO ADVANCED APPAREL ASSEMBLY COURSES. THE FIRST FOCUSED ON COUTURE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES AND TAILORED JACKETS. THE SECOND FOCUSED ON USE OF FLAT PATTERN DESIGN TECHNIQUES. STUDENTS WERE ALSO CHALLENGED TO BE SUSTAINABLE IN THEIR DESIGN DECISIONS.
80's OVERSIZED CROPPED JACKET
Course: Advanced Apparel Assembly
This was the final project for this course. The project was to sew an original jacket with a commercial sewing pattern but we were to alter the pattern and incorporate flat pattern design techniques. I used a thrifted 80's Simplicity jacket pattern because I wanted to sew a trendy jacket with modern touches. I changed the back yoke shape to a pointed yoke and center back styleline. I also gave the sleeves a settle flair.
ASYMMETRICAL MOTOR JACKET W/ RUFFLE
Course: Advanced Apparel Assembly
This was the final project for this course. The project was to sew an original jacket with a commercial sewing pattern. The motor jacket I created is lined with the same fabric in the same construction as the jacket. The commercial pattern had a zipper closure sewing along the edge of the front panels on each panel. I substituted the zipper with a ruffle and used the buttons on the collarbone area and snaps to close the right front piece to the left.
ANKARA PENCIL SKIRT
Course: Apparel Construction and Fit
The assignment was to sew a garment that hung from the waist. I wanted an item in my closet that identified with my roots. I sewed a simple pencil skirt in an African print fabric. I used a commercial pattern.
DECONSTRUCT/RECONSTRUCT
Course: Advanced Apparel Assembly
The project was to deconstruct and reconstruct a tailored jacket/blazer that was either from our own closet, new or thrifted. I used a thrifted double-breasted blazer that I thrifted. The blazer being 100% rayon had a tendency to be weak in shape and would wrinkle easily. I decided to take it apart and add interfacing to give it shape. I sewed a detachable velveteen shall collar with sew-on snaps because I wanted to be able to wear it with a collar and without. The sleeves were a bit short for my arms and so I lengthened them by attaching velveteen cuffs.
DECONSTRUCT/ RECONSTRUCT 2
Course: Advanced Apparel Assembly
I retook this course and the challenge for these deconstruct/ reconstruct was to use flat pattern design techniques in the reconstructed garment. I incorporated vertical and diagonal stylelines. We were also to consider ways in which we could design with sustainability in mind and I used most of the scrap pieces that I cut off to add a pleated edge strip on the front hem.
MEN'S BOTTON-UP TO RUFFLED SLEEVE TOP
Course: Advanced Apparel Assembly
The challenge was to give a thrifted men's button-up a new life. We were directed to research on Pinterest and You-Tube for ideas. I created this fun ruffled sleeve top for to be worn on a hot summer day.
SPECIAL OCCASION DRESS
Course: Apparel Construction and Fit
The assignment was to construct a garment that hung from the shoulders and complimented our figures. I chose to sew a fit and flared dress because I believe they suit my pear-shaped physique. For fabric selection, I chose delicate and novelty fabrics for a special occasion dress. Working with them was challenging because they had a tendency to slip and the organza was too delicate. I used a commercial pattern.
I made this quilt in High School. We the students had the option to choose a design idea from Pinterest and find a quilt with instructions. Making quilts was new to me at the time and I thoroughly enjoyed the project. The triangles were a definite challenge in making sure all aligned evenly.
